The ICA’s Ekow Eshun talks about the magnificent new creation from Turner Prize-winning artist and filmmaker Douglas Gordon and French artist Philippe Parreno.

The film -shot entirely in HD- was made by training 17 cameras, under the supervision of acclaimed cinematographer Darius Khondji, solely on footballer Zinédine Zidane over the course of a single match between Real Madrid and Villareal.

Zidane himself recounts, in voice-over, what he can and cannot remember from his matches. Magnificently edited and accompanied by a majestic score from Scottish rock heroes Mogwai, this is not only the greatest football movie ever made, but also one of the finest studies of man in the workplace, an ode to the loneliness of the athlete and the poise and resilience of the human body.

After seeing rahzel play live however, his focus changed and once he had debuted his talents at an improv show in 2003, the gigs started to roll in and since then he has wowed and bafled audiences all over the UK and Europe, hosted nights, mc’d, sung, compaired and played all over the place and presented Get-lucky T.V’s ‘the freestyle show’, hosted the ‘Nokia Basketball Arena’ in the ‘Earls Court Urban Music Festival’ and performed with and supported the likes of Grooverider, Shy fx, killa kella, Phi-life cypher, Andy C and Jazzy Jeff amongst others, earning him a reputation as an multi-talented, innovative and exhilerating live performer.

Hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Juana Molina is an extraordinary singer / songwriter / producer with a remarkable tale to tell. Formerly a celebrated Argentinian comic with her own successful TV show, Segundo is her second album, and the first to be heard outside her home country. Turning her back on her previous career, Juana’s music flows from her acoustic guitar, off-kilter electronic sounds and rhythms and a vast, strangely comforting plethora of noises from flora and fauna, while her voice is soothing and mesmeric. Segundo is a wonderful album bubbling with joy and underpinned by gentle grace.

Juana explains: “My father taught me to play guitar when I was five and I’ve been in a musical ambience all my life. During the summers we lived in the same house with Vinicius de Moraes and Chico Buarque; my father played with them and they were always improvising songs to cheer up the kids. When a military coup d’etat seized the country our family fled to Paris. We lived there for six years and came back to Argentina when democracy was restored.”

Back in Buenos Aires, Juana became a singer in various bands, but feeling like she needed to brush up her guitar playing, she had to come up with some money for lessons. A curious twist of fate saw Juana Molina begin working as a comedian on television. Suddenly, she was a star with her own show – Juana and Her Sisters – which became a hit in the rest of the (not-inconsiderable) Spanish-speaking world. She earned a reputation as the most acclaimed television comedian in Argentina. Her stellar comedic career meant her musical aspirations, which lay nearest to her heart, lay dormant for seven years.

Realising how far from her original goal she now was, Juana started working on her first album Rara (released by MCA Argentina, 1996). She moved to Los Angeles in 1998 an started all over again, playing gigs in local clubs. At this time she started work on Segundo (released in Argentina in December 2000), which is only now finding a release in the UK.

Conceived as a live show and a dvd release “greedy baby” is a collaboration between electronic music pioneers Plaid and video artist bob jaroc. Plaid and bob have worked together for the last 4 years on the plaid live show, touring the ever evolving show around the world. The a/v show has gained a fearsome reputation, playing at a wide range of music festivals, digital arts/film festivals and countless headline shows as far afield as Tokyo and Moscow.

The greedy baby project seeks to continue the relationship between sound and image, creating a live show as a cohesive collaboration between musicians and filmmaker. For this soundtrack Plaid’s music is very rich, with a classic soundtrack feel, Plaid’s electronics fleshed out with thoughtful arrangements with strings, choral voices, thembe and bossa piano. What is more the album was written in 5.1 surround sound specifically for the audio visual experience, which makes it a unique piece of work and an incredible experience for the eyes and ears.

Danger Mouse gained unprecedented notoriety after producing his infamous Grey Album, a unique work touted as one of the most intriguing productions of all time, an album that forever raised the bar on hip hop experimentalism, dubbed a ‘bootleg masterpiece’ by GQ. With one million illegal downloads in one day and the ensuing legal battles between major record companies and copyright advocates, the Grey Album is considered a watershed moment in music history.

From Monty Python to current film Tideland, Terry Gilliam’s reputation lies in his visual imagination & uncomprimising nature. Described by Gilliam as ‘Alice in Wonderland meets Psycho’,and based on the critically acclaimed novel of the same name, Tideland depicts the world of Jeliza-Rose (Jodelle Ferland), a world where fireflies have names, squirrels talk, and the heads of four dolls, long since separated from their bodies, keep her company.

For me the film is about trying to show the resilience of children and how strong they are, so you throw them into the deep s**t and they still come out shining. Terry Gilliam
